Welcome
to the Art of Susan Hale |
I have
always loved to draw and paint. Living in the Wisconsin country side
is a constant inspiration
to me. It seems
everywhere I look I see a painting-the patterns of a fresh cut
alfalfa field, tassling corn, popcorn clouds in a cerulean sky. Color
and pattern
are important to me. I try to interpret my landscapes onto the
canvas with my own unique sense of color and design. My
studio is a charming fieldstone summer kitchen built by German
immigrants around the 1860's. It sits
right behind our fieldstone farmhouse in a very inspirational
setting of old farm buildings and my flower gardens. I can even
hear the mooing
of our neighbor's cattle when I work.
|
 |
My
husband restored the summer kitchen building and turned it into my studio
about 8 years ago. He used all old lumber and beams so it would look original
(a fire destroyed parts of it). It really is very charming and I love working in
it.
I have an open house every year during the Cedarburg Arts Weekend which includes tours
of artists studios (Sat. & Sun.) that are not normally open to the public.
I also host a "Spooky Soup Supper" every Halloween for friends in the
intimate atmosphere all decorated for Halloween. |
| |
| My art is also inspired
by the places I have traveled, Mexico and Italy especially. When I
travel, I am always sketching the people and places and have numerous
sketchbooks filled with drawings. |
 |
My first trip to Italy in 1994 was
an epiphany for me as I experienced medieval art and the Old Masters
in the flesh for the first time. I came home dying to paint....and
have been painting ever since. Of course I am influenced by the Old
Masters, The Impressionists, and by the magical realism of Mexico.
But there is truly "no place like home" as I live in the
wonderful art-oriented community of Cedarburg, Wisconsin and have a
summer cabin in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. |
| |
My paintings are known for their
use of color, pattern and sense of optimism. I want to impart to the
viewer the beauty and energy I feel and see as I witness nature and
the landscape. I love to paint outdoors, plein-air. It is so invigorating
to me to experience painting not only through my eyes but also through
the feel of the breeze or the warmth of the sunlight on my shoulders,
and the sounds that surround me. Oil is my primary medium butI also
work in acrylic, pastel and encaustic.
|
| |
| I have been an exhibiting artist
for over 30 yeaars. Weaving, children's book illustration and soft
scultpture are some of the media I have exhibited over the years. I
exhibited at art fairs inthe 70's and 80's including the Milwaukee
Lakefront Festival of the Arts and the Madison Art Fair on the Square.
I have been an active volunteer in the arts community in Cedarburg
and am a founding member of the Cedarburg Artists Guild, the Cedarburg
Cultural Center and Christmas in the Country a nationally recognized
craft show held in Cedarburg. |
